POST-RACE TRIP

Rwanda is approximately the size of the U.S. state of Maryland. It sits south of the equator in central Africa. This landlocked country is bordered by Burundi to the south, Tanzania to the east, Uganda to the north, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.

Known as the “land of a thousand hills,” Rwanda’s landscape is mostly hilly and mountainous. The Virunga Mountains, located in the northwest part of Rwanda, contain the country’s highest peak, Karisimbi, which reaches 15,000 feet.

Two major African rivers, the Nile and the Congo, flow through Rwanda. Lake Kivu is the country’s largest lake (and Africa’s sixth largest) and separates Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. At its deepest point, Lake Kivu plunges 722 feet (220 meters) below the surface. Many people live on the shores of Lake Kivu and fish its water.

In addition to the Rwandan people, the two major attractions are its delicious coffee and trekking for Silverback Gorillas.

Trekking for Silverback Gorillas is a mystical experience. It is like visiting relatives. Why you ask? I guess because they are a 98% match with human DNA. My first trek was in 2007. The day started at 6am and we hiked uphill for 45-minutes and were met by the Sabinyo Gorilla Family. They were a herd of 15 or so including babies. I remember taking a picture of the female gorilla, when a baby smacked me out of the way as I was between him and his mama. In 2008 I revisited the Sabinyo family, and a young adult gorilla smacked me on the shoulder as if to say ‘Hi, remember me!’. In 2023, I went trekking again and this time an old gorilla smacked me on the head. The gorilla was asking me ‘where have you been for the last 15-years?’ It is a spiritual journey visiting the Sabinyos.
